What is a Celebrant

Finding the Right Funeral Celebrant

Finding the Right Funeral Celebrant

A celebrant creates and delivers a non religious ceremony. This may be a funeral, celebration of life, remembrance service, memorial, wedding, civil partnership, vow renewal, baby naming, gender reveal and any other event that involves the spoken word and someone to officiate.

Milestone Moments is a fully qualified, professional Funeral Celebrant having trained with The Academy of Modern Celebrancy in 2024.

Finding the Right Funeral Celebrant

It is your choice how you find the right celebrant. If you are using a Funeral Director, they will have list of regular celebrants that they use. However, you are free or make your own personal choice. This maybe a celebrant from a funeral you attended or one that has been recommended. It is your ceremony for your loved one and you need to be confident that your chosen celebrant will be able to deliver the ceremony meeting your requirements.

What's Involved

Finding the Right Funeral Celebrant

What's Involved

Once you have decided that you'd like Milestone Moments to officiate at your ceremony, you can either make direct contact via the "Contact" section on this website or ask your Funeral Director to do this on your behalf. Once availability has been confirmed, an initial meeting will be arranged. This will normally be face to face in the comfort of your own home. This can also be held at any other location you would prefer or even over "Teams" or "Zoom" if there are others you would like to attend who may be spread across different locations.

The Initial Meeting

What's Involved

There are no restrictions as to where you hold a funeral service or service of remembrance. This doesn't have to be in a crematorium or at a graveside, Monday to Friday during business hours. As long as you have permission from the land or venue owner, you can have a ceremony virtually anywhere. Your loved one may have had their own favourite place, supported a particular football club or been a regular at their favourite pub. The beauty of a celebrant led ceremony is that it can be tailored to what you or your loved one wants. Your celebrant will discuss any ideas or suggestions with you and will work with you and support you in achieving these.

The Initial Meeting

The Initial Meeting

The Initial Meeting

Milestone Moments appreciates that planning a funeral can be a very daunting experience at a time of significant emotional grief. The aim is to take the stress out of the process by signposting, guiding and advising  clients on what they may like to include in their ceremony. The emphasis here is that it is their ceremony for their loved ones and the role of the celebrant is to ensure that all requirements are met.

At the initial meeting with the family and any others who you would like to be present, the celebrant will guide you through your loved one's life and significant events and gather information. Discussions also take place regarding any specific elements of the ceremony that need to be included and any specific requests.

Order of Service

The Initial Meeting

The Initial Meeting

Following the initial meeting, Milestone Moments will write a draft ceremony in the form of an Order of Service. This will include any music choices, readings, poems etc but will also include the Eulogy, the Committal and any announcements. The script will include a personal reflection of the deceased and their life. The script will capture the true personality and essence of  your loved one and will be a celebration of their life.

The Order of Service can be amended until the client is happy to give the final approval.

The client may wish to ask others to read or to have significant pieces of music played.

All scripts are original works written without the use of Artificial Intelligence

About Milestone Moments

Organising a funeral can be overwhelming which is why many people choose to use the services of a Funeral Director. Even so, there are decisions and arrangements that need to be made by family and friends themselves.

On the day of the ceremony, the celebrant provides support to the mourners and ensures that all necessary arrangements at the venue are in place.

The celebrant leads the service on the day and is responsible for ensuring it runs smoothly and to time

Hello. My name is Rachel Marriott and I'm an East Anglian girl. Frequently Asked Questions

Please use the contact form if  you cannot find an answer to your question.

Funeral celebrants are not bound by any religious traditions or requirements. They focus on honouring and celebrating  a life through personalised storytelling, music choices and cultural rituals. There is more scope to personalise a celebrant led ceremony. Hymns, religious prayers and readings can still be incorporated into the ceremony.

Most crematoria will allow 30-45 minutes for the ceremony. However, it may be possible to book a double time slot. Ceremonies at other venues will depend on the hire of the facility but this is normally something that can be negotiated. The land or venue owner will normally stipulate the time permitted once they have provided permission to hold the ceremony.

This is dependant upon the venue owner. Where this is not possible, Milestone Moments will ensure the script includes references to pets or animals and where possible a video of them can be played at the ceremony.

There is no pressure whatsoever for individuals to read at the ceremony. The role of the celebrant is to ensure the smooth running of the service. "Secret signals" will be discussed with those who are due to read and the celebrant if they are unable to read on the day and the celebrant will read on their behalf without anyone else even realising.

Typically, a Funeral Director organises the logistics of a funeral such as transporting the body to the ceremony venue and arranging the burial or cremation. A celebrant focuses on the content and delivery of the ceremony. Funeral Directors and celebrants work together but their roles are distinct.

Yes. Celebrants can lead memorial services, scattering of ashes and remembrance services. These may take place weeks or months after the actual funeral.

No. Traditionally Funeral Directors, Crematorium Assistants and Chapel Attendants wear black or dark coloured clothing or uniforms as a mark of respect and mourning. However, if the client requests that mourners can wear bright colours, they are also at liberty to ask their celebrant to do the same. It is their choice. Funerals for young persons may often have a brighter dress code.

Yes - 100% if this is what the client would like. There are no rules that say laughter isn't allowed at a funeral.  It is a celebration of life and whilst it provides a chance to say a final farewell, it is also an opportunity to remember and celebrate the true personality of the person who has passed. It is the client's choice as to the tone of their ceremony. If a loved one's personality was humorous, the client may like to include some funny memories of them or their favourite joke or saying. Whatever they feel represents their loved one in the best way possible. Music choices can often have an element of humour included in the lyrics. Milestone Moments will work with their clients to deliver a memorable ceremony.
